What exactly is a “Gschmå-Platzl”?

“Gschmå” is a word peculiar to the Salzkammergut area and seldom used elsewhere, but what does it actually mean?

“Gschmå” means: cosy, likeable, beautiful, enjoyable, pleasant.  When all’s well with the world then everything is “gschmå”.

Here, in the Lake Wolfgangsee area, guests can now find out what this expression means in a very special way.  A comprehensive project has been undertaken to establish “Gschmå-Platzls”: the most reinvigorating of places in the most beautiful surroundings.

We are told by the project initiators, the local mayors and the Lake Wolfgangsee Tourism team that guests are always asking what the word ‘gschmå’ means.  Their reply is unanimous: “It’s not easy to explain, as it is a typical expression in the local dialect. That gave us an idea - to show guests what is actually meant by ‘gschmå’.  In our region, we have many magnificent hiking trails with superb vantage points.  It was precisely at these points that the “Gschmå-places” were set up, and now the visitor, in declaring - fantastic, super, brilliant, the best, awesome, amazing, cool, great or wow... is actually voicing the meaning of ‘gschmå’!”
