St. Gilgen Heritage Museum

St. Gilgen, Salzburg, Österreich

The Wetzl- or Einsiedlerhäusl-house, built in 1655, is the place where you can find out some things about the Local History of the Community St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee.

Shortly after the Thirty Years War this house was erected because at that time the bobbin lace making developed to be an important cottage industry of St. Gilgen.
Of particular interest among the exhibition items ist the portrayal of the Salzburger bobbin lace.

This house, which displays a remarkable collection of sacred items, also served as home for close relatives of the well known and famous W. A. Mozart.

Exhibited are also original glassware pieces from the glassworks of St. Gilgen (1701 - 1820). The famous "Wolfgangiflaschln", waterflasks used from the pilgrims of Falkenstein (which used to be the fourth largest place of pilgrimage in the Christian world), were produced there. Reproductions of the original flasks may be purchased in the museum.

The animal collection of biologist and Nobelprize winner Karl von Frisch with its 4.700 objects mainly represent the insect world of our region.

In 1994 the Local History Museum won the Austrian Government award for museums and 2003 the got the austrian Museum-seal of quality.
