Das Werk wurde bis 1481 in mehrjähriger Arbeit von Michael Pacher geschaffen und per Schiff und auf Wägen nach St. Wolfgang gebracht. Der Altar ist 12,5m hoch, im geöffneten Zustand mehr als 6m breit und zeigt auf den Flügeln Szenen aus dem Leben Jesu und des Hl. Wolfgang. Der geschnitzte Mittelteil (Schrein) stellt die Krönung der Gotttesmutter Maria dar. Die darunter befindliche Predella zeigt die Anbetung der Hl. Drei Könige. Die Spitze des Altares bildet das filigran geschnitze Gesprenge - dominiert wird das Kunstwerk von einem ausdrucksstarken, lebensgroßen Kruzifix.
