Strobl is situated at the east shore of the Abersee lake, which is the old name of this part of Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee). The name goes back to the iron merchant family Strobl, of whom the village's Coat of Arms reminds us. The name Strobl meaning "unkempt man" was very common in southern Germany.
From late medieval times to the 17th century Strobl was a centre of pilgrims and porters. When the nearby town of Bad Ischl became famous because of the Habsburg family Strobl became increasingly important, too.
At the turn of the century it had already become a well-known holiday resort with modern facilities. With its wide, flat lakeshore and natural beaches today Strobl is among the most famous holiday resorts in the Salzkammergut region, which features almost all kinds of sports and leisure time facilities.
The Postalm area (1,200-2,000 m altitude) near Strobl is the largest mountain plateau in Austria (40 km²). In summer one can go on extensive hiking tours, and in winter the ski center has 8 lifts, numerous downhill slopes and nordic ski trails at all levels of ability.
