The Emperor’s Festival in St. Gilgen
Emperor Franz Josef was of great importance in the development of tourism in the Salzkammergut region. He spent his summer holidays annually in Bad Ischl. He often visited Lake Wolfgangsee too, the Schafberg Mountain being a popular goal for the passionate hunter and hiker. On Wednesday, 12th July 1893, he was ceremonially received in St. Gilgen. The poet and summer resident, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, mentioned this special event in her diary. St. Gilgen now celebrates this annually as the “Kaiserfest” (Emperor’s Festival)!
