Verkehrs- und Ischlerbahnmuseum Mondsee

Mondsee am Mondsee, Oberösterreich, Österreich
  • Suitable for groups

The museum, which is housed in the original boiler house, is intended to commemorate the former narrow-gauge railway that connected Salzburg with Bad Ischl until 1957 .

Not only plans and photos, but also locomotives and carriages give an impression of the time when the much-loved railroad still steamed through the country.

In 1890, the concession for the "narrow-gauge local railroad Ischl - Salzburg with branch line Mondsee and Steindorf" and for the Schafbergbahn was granted and the "Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn-Gesellschaft", based in Salzburg, was founded. The Ischl - Strobl branch line was opened on August 15, 1890 and the continuous line from Salzburg to Bad Ischl was opened on July 12, 1893. The entire route of the SKGLB was 676 km long, the track gauge was 0.76 m. The line consisted of ten stations and 21 stops. During the First World War, some of the SKGLB vehicles were used in Bosnia, including locomotive no. 9 from 1916, which is on display in Mondsee on the former station site and current museum.

In the post-war years, operations could only be maintained with great financial difficulties. Due to the increase in car traffic, the railroad became increasingly unprofitable and despite efforts by the provincial governments of Upper Austria and Salzburg and the tourism associations of the time, the funds required to modernize and maintain operations could not be raised.

The railroad was finally closed on September 30, 1957. Thus, one of the most beautiful local railroads, which opened up one of the most charming landscapes in Austria and had a special place in the hearts of the inhabitants, was sung about in song and immortalized in film, ceased to exist. Many efforts to revive the line have unfortunately remained unsuccessful to this day.
