The uniquely clear and excellent water quality and its abundance of fish distinguish Lake Wolfgang as a fisherman's paradise. The presence of the endangered pearl fish also vouches for the quality of the water. The 12.8 km² Wolfgangsee is divided into two lake basins by the constriction from the Zinkenbach and the Dittlbach before St. Wolfgang, where the lake is only 20 meters deep. The 7.5 km² St. Gilgen basin has the greatest depth of 114 meters. The smaller Strobl basin, covering 5.4 km², is 67 meters deep.
Occurring fish species: Arctic char, whitefish, whitefish, lake trout, pike, pikeperch, perch, eel, eelpout, bream, aitel and various whitefish species. Protected is the pearlfish!
