Over 1,000 years of history, famous places such as the Schafberg, the Weisses Rössl or the pilgrimage church in St. Wolfgang, an incomparable natural paradise in every season and a lake with drinking water quality - all combined in one place.

Lake Wolfgangsee is not just any one of the 76 lakes in the world-famous Salzkammergut region. It exerts a magical  attraction and has done so for many hundreds of years. Here are some details about Lake Wolfgangsee:
  • Area: 12.4 square kilometres
  • Length: 11,900 metres
  • Depth: up to 114 metres
  • Nearest point: 210 metres
  • Highest water temperature ever recorded: 28.3 °C
  • Largest catch: lake trout, 123 cm long, weighing 32 kilograms.

Three places, three words: cosy-hospitable-genial

At Lake Wolfgangsee, you will come across the number 3 again and again, which starts with the places. St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang share the lake. Together they form a perfect unit and have one common goal: to surprise and satisfy guests. You can easily get from one place to another with the WolfgangseeSchifffahrt, for example.

Three magical peaks - three times the happiness

We find the number 3 again. A special feature of the three villages of St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang is that all three have a local mountain and that you can easily reach all three. By cable car, cog railway or car.

The Zwölferhorn in St. Gilgen is a year-round mountain. The cable car runs in spring, summer, autumn and winter and the landscape offers different attractions each time. The mountain is an insider tip for skiers and ski tourers. There are many excellent routes around the mountain for mountain bikers and it is a paradise for hikers. Even older people or families with pushchairs can hike here without any problems. The view from St. Gilgen's local mountain is uniquely beautiful and always breathtaking.

The Postalm, the largest contiguous alpine pasture area in Austria, is easily accessible by car from Strobl. If you want to hike for hours through unspoilt nature or conquer easy summits and relax on the alpine meadows, then the Postalm is the right place for you. There is also a via ferrata for the brave. In winter, ski lifts and a ski school are available. The Postalm is also known far and wide as a cross-country skiing paradise. In summer and winter, the countless mountain huts offer delicacies from local farmers.

One of the most striking mountains in the Salzkammergut is the Schafberg. A cog railway was built 130 years ago up the 1783 m high mountain. This railway still runs today from St. Wolfgang and is popular with guests and locals alike. The Schafberg can of course also be reached on foot. Many paths lead to the top and each has its own charm. Once at the top, you should take your time to enjoy this unique view. No fewer than 7 lakes can be discovered from up here and the view stretches from the Bohemian Forest in the north to the Alps in the south. The northernmost glacier in the Alps, the Dachstein, is right in front of your eyes.

Lake Wolfgangsee offers countless opportunities, and not just for hikers. All kinds of water sports such as swimming, water skiing, sailing, surfing, diving or horse riding, tennis, golf, cycling, fishing, running, Nordic walking can also be practised on Lake Wolfgangsee.

You should not only relax and pamper your body, but also your mind and soul. Thanks to its centuries-old culture, Lake Wolfgangsee offers museums, sacred art such as the world-famous Michael Pacher Altar and themed hiking trails.
But the palate also likes to be spoilt and the culinary delights in the toque-awarded restaurants, creative restaurants or down-to-earth inns are full of surprises.

Under the motto "The best festivals for our guests", there is a varied programme of events on Lake Wolfgangsee that really does offer something for every taste: the Nannerlfest and the Kaiserfest in St. Gilgen, the autumn market in Strobl, or the summer nights in St. Wolfgang. The calendar of events is full of such highlights. These festivals are both sporty and sociable and are sure to remain unforgettable for visitors.
