A small mountain lake lies beneath the walls of the Schafberg area in an impressive environment. Many people have immortalised themselves in the rock that rises to the west of the lake, most of them more recently. Nearby, a field is called "Heimliches Gericht" (Secret Court), further up lies the Törl, the border between Upper Austria and Salzburg. Many marmots live in the area.
There is a legend about a witch who kidnapped a boy and had to "walk around" here as punishment and about the devil who likes to hang around here.
The Mönichsee lies at an altitude of 1300 metres between Schafberg and Vormauer. The path to it takes around 2 hours via the Auerriesen, the deeply incised valley of the Dittlbach stream.
