Since 1786, the Höplinger family has managed their fishing rights on Lake Wolfgang, which they initially leased and then purchased from the monarchy after the archbishopric was abolished, in an unbroken line of succession covering 864 hectares. This also includes the majority of its tributaries as well as the Ischler Ache. In the past, the fish were mainly caught with drag nets, so-called "Seegen". Today, gillnets and fish traps are mostly used.

The first anglers began to discover Lake Wolfgang around 1900. These were mainly guests from Germany and England who were staying in St. Wolfgang for their summer holidays. From then on, Lake Wolfgang made more and more friends among local anglers and fishing holidaymakers and its reputation as a fishing and nature paradise spread far beyond the borders of the Salzkammergut.

Lake Wolfgangsee covers an area of around 13 square kilometres and is 114 metres deep at its deepest point. Thanks to a strongly developed environmental awareness and great financial sacrifices by all three neighbouring communities, the lake has absolute drinking water quality and is saturated with oxygen right down to the bottom, even at its deepest points. These two factors guarantee an ideal habitat for underwater flora and fauna, as well as the excellent quality and flavour of the fish that can be caught in it. From a fishing point of view, Lake Wolfgangsee is a mixed type of lake. The deeper western part is of the lake-sailbling type, while the somewhat shallower eastern part is of the coregonensee type.

Great efforts are made to sustainably and carefully manage the fish stock in its original form, as well as the distinct biodiversity of this lake, in order to preserve it.

The most important thing when buying fish is the freshness of the product. But water quality, food supply and spawning season are also decisive factors for fish quality. The water quality of our lake is excellent thanks to our clean tributaries and the ring canalisation built at great expense by the neighbouring communities. The food supply of Lake Wolfgang is good. Fish are the final link in the food chain.
